How Roadkill Led to Education

When we were asked in class to answer the prompt of how we had changed a public space, I instantly thought back to this one day. Even though I didn't really change the space, I did notice something quite funny.

Warning: the next paragraph gets a little graphic

One day in summer 2019, I was biking around looking for one of my friends and took the more convenient parking lot route (I used to live in Somerset). On my way back I saw a huge bird that I later realized was a vulture, which is very unusual because I had never seen one in the suburbs before. As I got closer I saw that it was poking at something on the ground...a dead bunny. It had already made it's way to pecking out one of it's kidneys, the blood was still fresh and dark red. I biked past it as fast as I could and described the scene to the rest of my friends.

They thought I was joking at first and then I took them to the site. Almost immediately, all the boys went up close to it, scaring the vulture away, while the girls watched from a distance. One of them even found a stick and started poking at it. There were about 12-15 of us, about 6 were girls, this was the day I noticed the difference in nature of the two genders. I wasn't trying to go by the norms, I was - and still am - not trying to abide by them. I just wanted the bunny to rest in peace and wasn't ready to see the mess again, but the boys went right ahead and got an anatomy lesson from it. I thought the huge difference was really funny and I started to think more about what makes people sincerely act that way. I might have coincidentally gotten stuck with a group where all the boys were psychopaths and the girls were actually normal, no offense to them.

All that said, I started to appreciate everyone's differences in personality a little more after this event. I think no matter the instance, be it a fight or unusual encounter like this one, we should be open to the different ways people handle it and pay attention to their thought processes because the way you see it could be missing out a huge piece of the story.

and now, the memes:

  1. It's interesting how society makes us have these opinions of others in our head with the impression that they give us without actually looking at their perspective closely, isn't it? Sometimes we forget that each individual is different and the way they process information is different as well. Though it sounded traumatizing, I like the anecdote you shared and your change of thought on the way of how others are seeing the world.

  2. Hi Veeksha, I remember you telling this to me before and I haven't had this type of experience before. I liked how you answered our in-class question using anecdotal evidence and sprinkled in some elements of dark humor in your writing. Also, your informal diction and how you broke it all it easy to read paragraphs made it fun to read. I also loved your meme!

  3. First, I love the meme! Second, I agree that everyone has different behavioral responses to certain events and as a society we need to learn to allow everyone to embrace their personalities. Also, the way you incorporated humor into this was very fun to read.
